Great Skate & Snow Day at the Great Park

One of our favorite FREE winter activities is returning to the Orange County Great Park... the Great Skate Ice Rink. The ice rink will be open Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, January 30th - February 28th, 2010, from 11am - 10pm. & Have I mentioned the best part yet? The Great Skate Ice Rink is absolutely & completely FREE! Admission is FREE, Skate Rentals are FREE & Parking is FREE. That's as FREE as you can get! Can I get a "Woot! Woot!"?

The entire event is FREE (although parking is $8) & there's no need to bring your sled, there will be plenty on hand. Just don't forget to dress warm & bring your mittens!

The Green Smoothie Girl at Belly Sprout

Have you ever heard of the Green Smoothie Girl? I hadn't, until I talked with Christy Funk of Belly Sprout. We just randomly, happened to meet at Baby Loves Disco. (Yep! After posting about Baby Loves Disco last week I had to check it out for myself, & I happy to report my kiddos & I loved it... but, more on that later.) Anyway, back to the Green Smoothie Girl.

So I have to admit, I was a bit put off at first, seriously, she's called the Green Smoothie Girl... I don't know, it just doesn't sound appetizing. But after hearing Christy rave about her, I decided to check her out for myself, & I think I'm in love. She promises (okay, she doesn't promise anything, but her "rather significant research says") following her "diet" results in better weight control, more energy, pretty skin & better sex (yes! I just said sex!).

The Green Smoothie Girl isn't anything like I expected. She describes herself as "a soccer mom. I wear mascara, jeans, big hoop earrings, and pedicured toenails. I use a razor in the shower. I flat-iron my salon-weaved hair. I go to the neighborhood BBQ, the family party, the church social - and I don't miserably sit in the corner with a plate of celery. I don't look or talk much like the earthy-crunchies."

I don't know about you, but she's sold intrigued me. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to find out that the Green Smoothie Girl is doing a FREE clinic & demo at Belly Sprout, THIS Thursday, October 15th from 7-8pm. She will be teaching a class on how to get 15 serving of greens & fruits into your diet (& even your children's) every day. Quickly, painlessly & even better - inexpensively! Awesome! I have a hard enough time getting just one serving of veggies in sometime! I might have to do some juggling of the schedules, but I definitely want to check this one out. Maybe I'll see you there!

Orange County Fire Authority Open House

I've got two boys. & they are your typical "boys". They love trucks, playing in the dirt, & playing policeman or fireman. That's why I just know they are going to absolutely LOVE the Orange County Fire Authority's Open House on Saturday. At this FREE event they'll get to meet real firefighter's & explore the home of the Orange County Fire Authority & training center, see live fire demonstrations, put out make-believe fires & take a ride in a fire engine. In addition to the Open House at the OCFA, 22 other Fire Houses will be hosting their own open houses on Saturday, October 10th for a list of all the locations go HERE.

Stargazing at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center

This Thursday, October 1st 2009, you & your family are invited to join the famous Dr. Krupp, Executive Director of the Griffith Park Observatory & Astronomer Extraordinaire, for a FREE Stargazing event. (The event is FREE, but there is a suggested donation of $10 per child or $15 per family.)

Join Dr. Krupp & the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center's naturalists to learn more about the night sky & Galileo. Before hand, kids can also create their own poster featuring Galileo and bring it to the event for a chance to win a Zip Line party for yourself and 15 friends.

Red Bull Soapbox Race Los Angeles

We don't usually post about things outside of the Orange County "bubble," but this event looks too crazy & wacky to miss... this Saturday, September 26th the Red Bull Soapbox Race is coming to Los Angeles. According to the website, this FREE and "wacky event will feature a field of more than 40 hand-made soapbox racers, driven by men and women daring enough to brave steep drops, a 90 degree turn and scary speeds in pursuit of achieving glory. "

The event will be held at 5th & Grand in Downtown Los Angeles. The website advises that "the event area is sure to be crowded, so public transit or car pooling are suggested. There is also parking available in Downtown, including large parking lots on Hill St. between 2nd and 4th."

The "pits" will open Saturday morning at 11am for soapbox viewing, with the Opening Ceremonies at 12:30pm, and the racing beginning at 1pm. Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza

The 8th annual Festival of Children is kicking off Friday, September 4th. The festival, happening throughout the month of September at South Coast Plaza will feature dozens of children's charities which will be on hand to showcase the work they are doing for children within the community. Celebrity appearances, activities, workshops, crafts, musical and cultural performances, "canstruction exhibit" and lots & lots of fun for kids of all ages. Some special events you might want to take special notice of are:
* Coffee, Tea, Mommy and Me happening every Friday at 11am during the festival. Taking place in the Carousel Court at South Coast Plaza, you and your toddlers are invited to an educational talk followed by an interactive activity lead by South Coast Music Together.

The Festival of Children's Foundation is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children by strengthening the charities that serve them. Cheap Souvenirs: Disneyland Pressed Pennies

Sometimes it's hard to escape going to the Happiest Place on Earth without coming home with some kind of souvenir. Luckily, my boys have become infatuated with the cheapest of Disneyland souvenirs - pressed pennies (also known as elongated pennies, smashed pennies & sometimes called squished pennies). Okay, okay, it's not actually the cheapest souvenir, there is a 48¢ sucker that holds that claim, but at 51-ish¢ (I say ish, because they actually only cost 50¢, you get the penny back), the Disneyland pressed penny is quite a deal.

If you are new to pressed pennies, you might be surprised to hear that it can be serious business. In fact, there are entire websites dedicated to the subject. You also might not realize that there are over 100 places in Disneyland, California Adventure & Downtown Disney that you can squish your pennies, & you can also find machines that press quarters & nickels as well.

While researching the "subject matter" I came across THIS website that had some great penny pressing tips I thought I'd pass along:

1. Use pre-1982 pennies – they contain more copper and thus hold their (new) shape better. You can buy rolls of these older pennies on Ebay in preparation.
2. Pickup a copy of the Pressed Penny Map at the Guest Services Desk when you enter the park. Takes the guessing out of where all the stations are. Also, some of the machines are only around for a short period of time, so you want to be sure to add those to your collection while they are available.
3. When you put your penny in the slot, along with the quarters, make sure the head of the penny is facing out and is upright.
4. Be careful when cleaning your pressed pennies – some are highly valuable and harsh cleaners can ruin them. Doubtful that would be a problem for most of us casual collectors, but good to know, just in case someone gifts you a rare Disney elongated coin (that is the fancy, collector name for pressed pennies).
5. If you are going to press more than a couple pennies, you might want to invest in a pressed penny book to store your loot. You can find these at most of the shops in the Park.

So there you have it, just about everything you've even wanted, or could possibly need to know about one of Disneyland's cheapest souvenirs. (However if you should happen to want to know more, go HERE for all kinds of wonderful information.) As mentioned earlier, you can always pick up a Pressed Penny Map at Guest Services upon arrival at Disneyland. But, if you want an easy to print guide of Disneyland pressed pennies go HERE. Prehistoric Pets

We've mentioned Preshistoric Pets before, but it's so much fun, I thought I'd mention it again. Located in Fountain Valley, Prehistoric Pets isn't exactly your typical pet store. They specialize in snakes, turtle, geckos & lizards. & At Prehistoric Pets you can get "up close and personal" with some of the animals, because this is one pet store, that is more like a zoo. You can visit with the 200 pound tortoise or check out the turtles for absolutely FREE. Although, for a mere $2.99 you can purchase veggies or worms to feed the animals. (My boys got a kick out of dangling those worms above the turtles & watching them swarm.) But in my opinion, the best deal is the Prehistoric Pets Reptile Zoo. The cost for admission is $8 for adults (under 4 gets in FREE), however you can redeem your ticket for $8 worth of merchandise. So, you can go inside the zoo, where your kids will be thrilled by the ginormous snakes & lizards. & If they are brave, they can touch (or even hold a snake or two), perhaps an iguana & probably a baby turtle. Then, you can redeem your ticket for worms & veggies and feed the animals on the way out. It was the perfect afternoon, & my boys are still talking about it. Or, if you'd rather... you can always have the reptiles come to you with Jurassic Parties.

Back to School: Fashion by Francie Pants

Project Playhouse at the Irvine Spectrum

The HomeAide Orange County's Project Playhouses are on display now (until September 12th) at the Irvine Spectrum Center.

Project Playhouse debuted in 1992 and has become HomeAid Orange County's signature fundraiser. In 18 years, the event has raised more than $5 million to help the organization fulfill its mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives.

The success of Project Playhouse is attributed to the incredibly generous builder teams who donate their time, talent and resources to construct each fantasy cottage. These whimsical playhouses contain working electrical systems and include such amenities as flat screen TVs, entertainment systems and video game players.

Over the next couple of weeks you can "tour" the playhouses weekends, from noon until 6pm. The cost is $10 per person (according to their website, but they charged me just $5 per person), children ages 3 & under are free. You can buy tickets at the Irvine Spectrum Center or online HERE. (Just realize, that you can't actually "tour" each playhouse. It's more like a sneak peak through the Dutch door.) Don't worry, you don't have to necessarily "tour" the playhouses to get a view. Even though the playhouses are closed during the week, you can still catch a good look at their exteriors. &, If you are just itching to buy a playhouse of your very own, the entire event culminates with the public auction of all the Project Playhouses.

Sno on the Go

Ever since the Fastfood Maven posted about Sno on the Go I've been dying to try it out! & I can definitely say I wasn't disappointed! Don't be fooled into thinking this is your average "shaved ice," because it isn't... it's so much more. The ice is shaved so thin, they can actually shape them into snow balls. Of course you can top your "snow ball" with over 20 "scrumptious" flavors (such as cotton candy, lemon-lime, watermelon or wedding cake), or try one of their "cream" flavors (praline, banana, or caramel to name a few) & there's always the "coffe house" flavors. If you are worried about your kids (or even you) spilling all over the place, they offer several "clear" flavors, & they even have a selection of "sugar-free" flavors. But, the fun doesn't have to stop there. In addition to flavors, you can top your "snow ball" with all kinds of toppings (everthing from soft serve vanilla ice cream to sweetened condensed milk), or real fruit. &, If you don't feel like creating your own concotion, try one of the pre-determined "speciality" treats. I LOVED the "tropical treat." Orange & Pineapple Sno stuffed with ice cream & strawberries, what's not to love?

FREE Summer Concerts at Chapman University

Chapman University's FREE family-friendly summer outdoor concert series kicks off tonight, Friday July 31st. They will be offering 3 FREE concerts throughout the remainder of the summer (Fridays: July 31st, August 14th & August 21st). All of the concerts will begin at 6pm & will be taking place on the Wells Fargo Stage in front of the Leatherby Libraries in the center of the campus. & When we say FREE, we mean FREE. Not only is the concert & the parking FREE, but they will also be handing out FREE lemonade, popcorn & coffee!

So grab your blankets, bring some lawn chairs, & you are welcome to bring a picnic dinner (please no BBQ grills though!). The campus will open for picnicking at 5pm & the show will start at 6pm!
