San Diego Getaway, with Kids

Meet Tonya a self-described "champagne sipping, chocolate eating, camera carrying, crafty, shopaholic mummy to twin toddlers and a home schooled teenager. I'm also an Aussie, living in California, and a military wife." In addition to all that, she somehow finds time to write, not just one, but three blogs: A Day in My Life, Currently Crafting and Munchkins & Mayhem. Lucky for us she lives just to the south of us, which makes her the perfect person to help you & I plan the perfect San Diego getaway, whether it's a weekend full of fun, or just for the day...

Hello to all of the fabulous readers of Just Spotted. My name is Tonya & I'm here to take you on a tour of San Diego. I have a teenager & twin toddlers so getting them out exploring our area is very important to me. We love to discover new places & see all that San Diego has to offer. Here are my top 20 destinations for family friendly activities this summer."

1. Balboa Park - You will need a few days here. Home to 15 museums, beautiful gardens, a playground for the little ones, the amazing Spreckels Organ Pavilion (which puts on FREE concerts over the summer), a Spanish Village, puppet shows, The Old Globe Theatre, restaurants, the famous San Diego Zoo and so much more.
2. Seaport Village - is one of my favorite places in San Diego. You will find FREE daily entertainment including bands, singers, magicians, palm readers and various other buskers and sideshows. Enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants or take a picnic to enjoy in the grassy area overlooking the bay. From flying kites, to horse and carriage rides and the carousel, there is so much to see and do. Take a stroll along the boardwalk that runs alongside the San Diego Bay and enjoy the view of the boats, the Coronado Bridge and the little duck pond.
3. San Diego Zoo – The newly launched Elephant Odyssey at the San Diego Zoo, makes this a must-see destination. The zoo after dark is truly an experience, when you are surrounded by the noises of the night. You will also find summer camps for the little ones and family safari sleepovers over the summer period.
4. Wild Animal Park – There is just so much to do at the Wild Animal Park it is almost impossible to see it all in a day. With summer evenings in the park holding special events, Dino Mountain back on display over the summer and the regular park activities such as safari’s, tours, sleepovers and exploring the numerous exhibits the kids are sure to sleep well in the evenings.
5. Sea World - Summer nights have begun with the special night-time shows and fireworks. You can start your day off with Breakfast with Elmo, enjoy the various shows, rides and exhibits throughout the day including the Sesame Street Bay of Play and then stay on throughout the evening to dine with Shamu and experience the night-time shows and fireworks. They currently have a special on tickets – adults at kids prices and a 2nd visit FREE.
6. La Jolla Cove – With restaurants, shopping, galleries, the Museum of Contemporary Art, viewing seals at the Children’s Pool, the Sunday farmer’s market, playing on the beach and snorkeling or kayaking around the Cove, La Jolla is a fabulous destination for all ages.
7. Legoland – There are over 50 rides, shows and attractions at Legoland and it is great day out for all ages. You’ll find Bob the Builder in 4D, a mini golf course, water parks, lego stations, X-Box gamespace, Volvo driving school, mini-land, a factory tour and lego galore. Don’t forget to bring your swim gear, you will need it. Oh and be sure to try the apple fries, they are delicious.
8. Sea Life Aquarium – This aquarium is a combination of lego and real-life sea creatures. It is directly next door to Legoland and if you go on the same day, you won’t have to pay for another day of parking, however, you may want to leave this for another day to truly experience it, after-all the kids are going to be exhausted after a full day at Legoland. There are discovery zones, touch stations and a brand new Sharks Revealed interactive exhibit as well as aquariums and plenty for the little ones to do.
9. Old Town – Step back in time to the birthplace of California. Between Presidio Park, Heritage Park, Old town San Diego Historic Park, The Old Town Theatre, Saturday markets, over 100 stores, 24 full service restaurants, galleries and hotels, you’ll be sure to experience the history of San Diego. A few of the things to see are the first one room schoolhouse, the reportedly haunted Whaley House, an 1850 Catholic Cemetery and living history demonstrations.
10. Coronado Concerts in the Park – From May 24th until September 13th Coronado offer FREE concerts in the park every Sunday evening. This is one of our favorite weekend activities. Pack up a picnic and head down to Spreckels Park for an evening of music and fun for the children with a large, newly renovated playground. I advise getting there at 5:30pm to get a great spot on the lawn. Coronado is a great place to stay with beautiful beaches and the legendary Hotel Del .
11. Mission Bay, Mission Beach & Belmont Park – With boardwalks alongside the sand, relaxing on the beach, surfing, Crystal Pier, Fiesta Island, the Belmont Park theme park, restaurants, and playgrounds and this is a great summer destination. We recently spent an entire day walking from Pacific Beach along the boardwalk and around to Fanuel Park stopping at Belmont Park, beachside cafe’s, to play in the sand and enjoy an ice-cream. It was one of the best days we’ve had as a family. There are vacation rentals right on Crystal Pier, Hotels along the boardwalks where guests will take chairs out onto the sand to watch the sun go down and locations for bonfires, fly kites and to water ski.
12. Maritime Museum – A collection of historic ships are open daily for public tours. There are various packages available including family sleepovers on board, cruises out on the bay, sunset sails, and Movies Before The Mast Film Festival about the Star of India.
13. Viejas - Viejas is so much more than just a Casino and Outlet Mall. It also offers Concerts in the Park from April – October and a splash zone for the kids. The Power of Nightfare will be showing Thursday – Sunday until 7th September. This is a Native American folklore show featuring magic, special effects, water fountains, lasers and pyrotechnics. Also Thursday nights in June, July and August feature a FREE movie in the park.
14. Downtown San Diego – is a hub of great things to see and do. There is the infamous Petco Park, the Gaslamp district, Little Italy, Horton Plaza for shopping, great restaurants and The New Children’s Museum.
15. Chula Vista Nature Center – If you want to learn more about the birds, animals, plants and sea life native to San Diego, then this is the perfect place. The nature center is located on Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge right on San Diego Bay. At the Nature Center you can explore an aquarium, outdoor nature park and take either a guided tour or stroll at your own pace around the nature trails.
16. Santee Lakes – This is a beautiful area if you are wanting to just relax with your family. There is camping, fishing, a spray pad for the little ones, boating, movies by the lake over the summer, paddle boats, playgrounds, walking paths, bird watching and picnic areas.
17. Birch Aquarium – Experience the wonders of the ocean with hands-on exhibits, feedings, the aquarium nursery, family programs and tidepool displays. There are over 60 habitats. You can also do off-site activities such as grunion runs, snorkel with sharks, moonlight pier walks and many other things. Check out their Calendar for a full list of activities.
18. Quail Botanical Gardens – Only 20 minutes north of San Diego, the Quail Botanical Gardens is over 35 acres of gardens, rainforest and exhibits. They offer several different events over the summer including insect and fairy festivals, and strings in the garden.
19. Kit Carson Park – Located in Escondido it offers hiking trails, playgrounds, a sports complex, picnic areas, ponds and a 5-acre arboretum including the amazing Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Sculpture Garden. It is also only a few miles away from the Wild Animal Park and North County Fair mall.
20. Mission Trails Regional Park – There are nearly 5,800 acres of natural and developed areas that encompass Mission Trails Regional Park. You will find 40 miles of trails, Lake Murray, camping, a state-of-the-art visitor center including a 94 seat theatre (with 4 shows running daily), picnic facilities, guided nature walks and this summer will be the first time they offer week-long educational programs for children aged 6-10.

BONUS: I know I said I’d only add my top 20 destinations, but I almost forgot that the San Diego County Fair will be operating from June 12th until July 5th. The fairgrounds are located in Del Mar, home to beautiful beaches, fabulous restaurants and boutique shopping.

So, if you are looking for a fun destination to take the kids this summer, come down south. San Diego has so much to offer whether you are here for the day or an extended vacation, you won't be disappointed. You can find out more about visiting San Diego especially about the parks, beaches and hotels from the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Getting to Know: Jenny & Picky Palate

Okay, so I'm the first the admit that I'm definitely not a gourmet cook by any means. But I do LOVE to eat. & You'll probably think I'm crazy, but cooks books totally intimidate me. I know, it sounds crazy... on one hand I love cook books. The possibility of a new recipe, the promise of a yummy meal. But then, on the other hand, they totally scare me - I'm terrible at reading cook books & actually picking out recipes, it's just too much for me to handle. I think that's why I have this obsession with food & recipe blogs. I love the pictures, I love the little side notes... it's kinda like getting a "tried and true" recipe from a friend. One of my all time favorite food bloggers is Orange County newbie Jenny, of the Picky Palate - where she "dresses up simple, family friendly recipes for even your pickiest eaters". We recently had the opportunity to chat with Jenny & thought you'd love getting to know another local Orange County blogger...

Just Spotted: What's a normal day like for you?
Jenny: A normal day for me consists of getting up around 7am, feeding the boys breakfast and getting my Kindergartner ready for school by 9am. My 3 year old and I run errands during the day, usually bake something and get dinner ready. After school, the boys and I run around outside then come in for bath time, dinner, story time then bed! That's it in a nutshell.

Just Spotted: What's the best advice you've ever received?
Jenny: Hmm, the best advice I've ever received would probably be the basic, treat others how you would like to be treated. And also laugh a lot!

Just Spotted: What is your favorite time of day?
Jenny: My favorite time of day is probably first thing in the morning. I love opening all the windows to let the sunshine in. It's also the time of day when I am most motivated to get things done.

Just Spotted:
One product you can't live without?
Jenny: PASTA, we have it all the time.

Just Spotted: How do you find time for yourself? Favorite treat or indulgence?
Jenny: I have found that it is so important to find time for yourself. One of my favorite things to do for myself is yoga on a regular basis. Working on my blog is also a great outlet for me, I love to see my posts come together.

Just Spotted: What was the inspiration for Picky Palate? How did you get started?
Jenny: The inspiration for Picky Palate was my children. I wanted to help other busy families out there with new creative dinner ideas who had picky eaters like I did. I started my blog October 2007 and knew nothing about blogging. I just dug right in and have learned so much along the way.

Just Spotted: Do you have a favorite post?
Jenny: It's funny because I feel like I cook better than I bake, but my dessert posts are my favorite. I think because they are much prettier to look at.

Just Spotted: What's your biggest challenge as a parent?
Jenny: Trying to juggle everything I want to do in life and still be a good mom. I work on it everyday!

Just Spotted: Do you have any favorite blogs you visit?
Jenny: Yes, all those on my blogroll.

Just Spotted: Do you have a favorite or best blogging moment?
Jenny: There are many, but I'd say being able to talk on the phone with Wolfgang Puck was really cool.

Just Spotted: Do you have a favorite OC family friendly activity?
Jenny: We have LOVED going to the beaches almost every weekend. I can't get enough of the Corona Del Mar Beach, it is really beautiful.

Just Spotted: Favorite OC restaurant?
Jenny: I am still working on this one. Haven't had much time to visit really good restaurants yet. Any suggestions?

Just Spotted: What do you like/ love about living in the OC?
Jenny: Definitely the beauty of the area. The AZ desert is nice in it's own way, but the OC is gorgeous.

Just Spotted: Any favorite OC sites we should all be reading?
Jenny: I just found this great blog called Daytripping Mom and she talks about great things to do in Southern California with your family. I am so excited to take a bunch of her tips!

Just Spotted: Favorite OC tips? Businesses? Shops?
Jenny: We are loving Sprinkles right now, especially since it's right down the street. Having Fashion Island so close is great too.

Just Spotted: Favorite Recipe?
Jenny: Hmmm, that's a tough one. I'll go with my latest Food Network recipe "Caramelized Banana Bread Drop Doughnuts." They are so good.

Just Spotted: Any advice for other "newbie" OC moms?
Jenny: I'm still taking advice from everyone else, so I would say...ask A LOT of questions!

Just Spotted: What has surprised you most about living in the OC?
Jenny: How much more time we are spending outside. If I could just convince the rest of my family to join us here, It'd be perfect!

Getting to Know: Jennifer & Tiny Oranges

Have you met Jennifer? She is a mommy to one, with another little darling one the way. As she says "motherhood has been joyous, exciting, exhausting, humbling, frustrating and exhilarating all at the same time." & Yet, somewhere she has finds the time to write the fabulous blog, Tiny Oranges. Haven't check it out yet? Then you don't know what your missing... "Tiny Oranges is an online lifestyle boutique for today's stylish mom." We've been lucky enough to get to know Jennifer a little bit better & thought you'd love to hear from her as well...

Just Spotted: What's a normal day like for you?
Jennifer: My husband leaves for work around 8:30am, so I am lucky he gets up with my daughter and lets me either sleep in or have some morning time to myself before the crazy day begins! Then I get up, we have breakfast together, and I hop on email, Tiny Oranges, and Twitter to see what is happening for the day! I usually then plan a little outing for the morning with my daughter. I like to get out of the house at least for a couple hours, so we either go to a park, run errands or meet up with friends some where. Then it's back home for mid-day nap time (my daughter - not me - I wish!) When she naps I try to fit a day's worth of work into 2 hours on the computer doing my blogs and answering emails. After she wakes up, we usually play for awhile, or do another little outing. Some days my mom and dad come down in the afternoon to give me a break, so I can either work or do errands "kid-free." I am very lucky they live only 10 minutes away. Then it's dinner time, we look forward to daddy coming home, and the nightly routine of bath and bedtime. After she goes down, I hop back on the computer to finish up any work. Then by 9pm, I am usually just exhausted. These days since I am pregnant, I usually collapse on the couch with a little bowl of ice cream and watch my favorite DVR'd shows for an hour. In my non-pregnant nights, the ice cream would be replaced by a glass of Chardonnay!

Just Spotted: What's the best advice you've ever received?
Jennifer: For parenting advice, my cousin Angie, who has two older kids, told me, "Just when some behavior or some situation with your kids gets so bad, you think you can't take one more day, it will CHANGE!" I have found that to be so true. Things will always be better the next day. My dear friend Pam (mom of three), also told me, "Ages and stages. Each age has it's challenges and it's rewards!" This has also been true for me. Just when something gets "easier" with my daughter, another challenging behavior will pop up. They always keep us on our toes!

Just Spotted: Any advice for new moms?
Jennifer: Be prepared for motherhood to also be a journey about learning more about yourself as you settle into your new role. Also to be prepared that parenthood can be like a great ride on a roller coaster. The highs are SO high and the joy is almost undescribable, but then the lows can leave you feeling defeated and out of control. Just know that after a low will come a high again, and try to enjoy the ride along the way!

Just Spotted: How do you find time for yourself? Favorite treat or indulgence?
Jennifer: Lately I have been making it a priority to go to Prenatal yoga at least once a week. The class is an hour and a half and it has been the greatest gift for myself. I am really a Type A personality, so for me to practice slowing my mind, and breathing and focusing on my core, has been incredibly helpful and been not only good for me physically, but mentally as well!

Just Spotted:
What was the inspiration for Tiny Oranges? How did you get started?
Jennifer: I was a wedding planner and had my own business for 6 years. It was amazing, and a great experience, but after I had my daughter I wasn't prepared for my world to be turned upside down! I thought I could do it all and be super woman. HA! That turned out to be a joke! To run my business like I wanted to would have required a full time nanny and many, many 13 hour days on weekends away from family at my events. I have always loved to work, and love having a creative outlet, but I didn't love the demands of my business and time away from my family. I knew something was going to have to change since we were considering having another baby, I just didn't know which way my life was going to go. In the meantime, two dear friends in the wedding industry launched a wedding blog called www.weddingchicks.com and I wrote an article for them, and saw their vision come to fruition with their blog. I absolutely fell in love with their site! I loved the layout, the simplicity, the design. I was totally inspired. Talking to them one day, I said, "I wish I could do a blog like this for OC moms and families" and they said, "why don't you???" That got my wheels spinning and I knew it was my next calling! I was already doing so many things in OC with my daughter, and felt with my network of friends, we were always sharing information and ideas, so I thought it would be a really great forum to share tips and local finds. The designer of www.weddingchicks.com designed my site for me and I worked really hard for many months to get it just how I wanted it. I launched www.tinyoranges.com in August, and the rest is history! It has been amazing for me because I can still be home with my daughter, but my work can be done totally on my own schedule and hours. It has allowed me the flexibility I didn't have, but still gives me an outlet for my sanity!

Just Spotted: Do you have a favorite post?
Jennifer: This is going to sound crazy, but my favorite post was the one after our home was burglarized (read it HERE). It was an awful experience to go through, but in a way, being able to blog about it and share the information I learned in the hopes to keep it happening from others helped me get through it.

Just Spotted:
Do you have any favorite blogs you visit?
Jennifer: Yours of course!!! I also love Fun Orange County Parks because we spend so much time visiting parks. I also discovered Daytripping Mom, which I think is a great one too!

Just Spotted: Do you have a favorite OC family friendly activity?
Jennifer: Lately we love doing an outing to Balboa Island and the Peninsula. We will meet friends on the Island by the ferry, take the ferry across to the Peninsula, go on the Ferris Wheel at the Fun Zone, then walk over to the playground by the Balboa Pier. If we have enough energy, we sometimes do lunch at Ruby's. It is such a fun outing, we get to do lots of things, and it is really cheap!!!! _____________________________________________________________________

Thanks Jennifer for letting us get to know you just a bit better. Personally, I love being able to get to know the real gal behind the blog! & For all of you looking to find "the juiciest places, spaces, products, services, outings & ideas" in Orange County, check out Jennifer & Tiny Oranges.

Getting to Know: Michele & Fun OC Parks

I don't know about you, but as a mom to little ones, I'm always on the look out for new parks to check out. Although we definitely have our favorites we like to visit, it's always fun & exciting to "play" somewhere new... that's why I LOVE Michele & her website Fun Orange County Parks. But rather than try to explain who Michele is & what she is all about, why don't I let her do it in her own words...

Basically, I'm a nut when it comes to my enthusiasm for parks and play. Add a talent for writing, a compulsion to organize information, ridiculous attention to detail, and a desire to share all this good stuff and you've got Fun Orange County Parks on Play Parks Central.

How does it work? I play with my team of expert playground testers (7 year old son and 3 year old daughter - and any other kid we can drag into the mix). I talk to the locals to find out the REAL highlights and hazards. I take tons of photos and post them to the blog, along with a map link and checklist. Then I cross my fingers and hope for comments.

My biggest wish is for more experts (that's you!) to share their experiences. Only mommy's know a day at the park with a 15-month old -- who trips on everything and eats bark -- is different from the school-aged kid who wants slides to be bigger and faster. So if you decide to try out Aliso Beach Park and you don't agree with my assessment, please share your own story in the comments.

Better yet, I'll have really done my job if you are inspired to fill out my form sending ME to YOUR favorite park. I live for those days! A new playground experience? Guided by someone who knows the inside scoop? Hurray!! Each individual contribution builds a stronger resource. And if you run a website, like Just Spotted, I reward you with a link back to your site.

My website is all about finding play parks. I want my visitors to have fun. I always say, "If just one mom brings her kid to a new park, then I've done my job." When I asked my computer-literate son what I should write for this post, he said "You're a good park finder. You find parks and say 'This one has a bathroom and that one doesn't.' The parks we find are always good. Your website stands out - how you use the real pictures of the park. I think it's a kid-friendly park website to look at because it has all the options of which parks you can go to."

Fun Facts
Newest Site Resource:
A link to dog-friendly parks under the Orange County Resources menu.

Most Useful Post also wins as Hardest Post to Write:
"Direct Links to City Website Parks Pages"

Proudest (Unofficial) Partner in Play:
I found KaBOOM ("a national non-profit that empowers communities to build playgrounds") through my work on Play Parks Central. They named me one of their "Playmakers in Action" for 2009. I try to help their worthy cause by spreading the word about their social network and Playspace Finder.

Who under-utilizes this resource?
I think it's PERFECT for parenting groups, like MOPS or MOMS Clubs. It would make playgroups SO much easier to plan. I've done all the work, they can just link to the site. It's also a great place for those planning birthday parties - I've had visitors e-mail me and we work together to find the best location.

What else am I crazy about?
My husband of 15 years, LEGOS, new music, Trader Joe's, sunsets over the Pacific, easy recipes, and Yosemite.

So next time your looking for a new place to "play", be sure to check out Fun Orange County Parks. Better yet, next time your at the park, any park, be sure to share your playground experience with Michele, so that we can all benefit!
